June 14, 1943 – Some German holiday, and had quite an argument trying to get the remainder of the packages out. My efforts were to no avail.
June 15, 1943 – The Germans are late with their appell. Had much paper work in the parcel hut. Some of the tins and tobacco stores are confused. You could not take the parcel to your room, but had to store the tins of food and the extra tobacco in the parcel hut. At first we had an individual box in which each man’s private stores were kept. As these were drawn out the Germans would puncture each tin to insure that no food was hoarded for possible escape.
June 16, 1943 – There has developed an error in the storeroom of 16 boxes. The only conclusion we can come to is that Bedwell’s inventory from Rotenburg was incorrect. Thal is in the hospital.
June 17, 1943 – Issued 176 American Red Cross and 12 Canadian Red Cross parcels. Everyone had a real bash that night. (A bash is when you go all out with the food, and forget about rationing for the next few days.)
June 18, 1943 – Formation today too long. Birds building a nest just above the canteen door. There is a very friendly cat in the compound.[18]
June 19, 1943 – Guards are being changed frequently. We have a new Unteroffizier in the parcel hut. Things are running much better in the parcel hut.
June 20, 1943 – The tobacco accounts are finally straightened out, and I had time to read and study Russian.
June 21, 1943 – Have Files in charge of all tobacco stores and I believe that we are getting that organized okay. One day just like the rest.[19]
June 22, 1943 – The Feldwebel in the parcel hut is a good soldier. Most Germans are very honest when they understand they are under supervision. Today I gave Schopert an opportunity to take a piece of my candy bar, with no one observing him. He stayed completely away from this temptation.
June 23, 1943 – Lt. Col. Van Vliet and Lt. Chappell from Rotenburg. Lt. Berlinski is the captain of one of the baseball teams. I believe I forgot to mention that Berlinski made the All-American basketball team two years running.
June 24, 1943 – Issued private parcels. Remember sack of candy balls – about 2 oz. and Abraham Lincoln and the futility of it all. (I just cannot recall what was meant by this cryptic entry.) Received 22 lagermarks as pay. Only asked for 30.
June 25, 1943 – Col. Drake has conscripted workers for the garden. Probably a good thing, as many men would take no exercise and everyone can eat from the garden.
Lt. Young is back from Posen. Lt. Young is actually an Air officer but was brought into the compound as a ground officer. He had received a very severe wound in the right shoulder from an incendiary bullet.
